Soooo over winter break, I got to see James Cameron's smash hit Avatar. Great movie, lots of racial undertones. So here are a few thoughts of my own I wanted to share with you guys (if you even give two shits).
- One of my main problems with the film was that the movie portrayed a white male entering an “ethnic world” for solely his personal gain and eventually becoming the leader/hero of the same people he oppressed. Although this is true, the concept of the white hero is not an unfamiliar one.
- The casting of the movie was so annoying. Did anyone else realize that whites were cast as the humans and people of color cast as the savages, Cameron is, subliminally, reinforcing the idea of white as the norm and the theory of white dominance and the “other” as the non-white body.
-The mere physical features and the savage ways of the Na’vi all perpetuate stereotypes of black people. The entire film is a re-imagining of the great genocide against people of color on America’s colonialism. And the blue-skinned Na’vi, with their painted faces and feathered arrows, are the ideal representations of the oppression that has been lobbed at various incantations of the “savage” that came before. Many of the local Na’vi ride around on horse-like creatures whooping and hollering, even forming custom “war parties” at one point. Many have braids and dreads, with jewelry and body painting similar to various African cultures.
- and my all time favorite stereotype of black women...our extreme sexuality. The movie most def played into white men's fetishization of black women. The portrayal of Black women as lascivious by nature is an enduring stereotype. The descriptive words associated with this stereotype are singular in their focus: seductive, alluring, and tempting. The idea that women of color are naturally and inevitably sexually promiscuous is reinforced in the film with Jake and Neytiri's relationship.
I know what you're thinking...blah de blah de blaaaah. but it's my blog and I'm allowed to share my thoughts on here so shut up :)
